WasteBolt wasn't dreamed up in a startup. It was built on a composting site, handling 70,000 tonnes a year, by someone who needed it and couldn't find it.
I'm Don. I've spent 20 years in waste management — and I'm still here, boots on the ground, today. I handle 70,000 tonnes per annum of organic materials for PAS100 compost production. I built WasteBolt a few years ago — selfishly, for my own team — because the tools we needed simply didn't exist. Digital waste transfer notes that actually worked. Compliance records that didn't require a filing cabinet. Something a gatehouse team could actually use.
I'm not someone who used to work in waste. I still do. That means every feature we ship gets tested against real daily operations, not a hypothetical workflow dreamed up in a meeting room. When something doesn't work on site, I know about it firsthand.
What started as an internal tool has grown into a platform used by sites across the UK. Not because of marketing — because waste managers kept finding it and asking for more. So we kept building.
Real needs, not assumed ones
Most software for the waste industry is built by people who have never worked on a site. They solve problems they imagine you have, not problems you actually face at 7am on a Tuesday when a tipper is waiting and your system won't load.
We expanded WasteBolt into Digital Waste Tracking because we could see the regulatory direction of travel — and because existing tools weren't keeping up. DWT isn't just a compliance box to tick. Done properly, it's a complete audit trail, instant reporting, and proof of duty of care. We built it that way.
Useful AI — not bolt-on AI
We believe in "good data in, good data out" — the opposite of rubbish in, rubbish out. That means AI should earn its place. Not every feature needs a language model behind it.
Where we've used AI — Bolt Upload, Ask Bolt — it solves a genuine problem: reading a paper waste document and turning it into a structured digital record in seconds, or querying months of waste data in plain English without writing a single report. That's useful AI. Not AI for the sake of a feature announcement.
No two sites are the same
Some sites have weighbridges. Some don't. Some are large transfer stations with multiple gatehouse teams. Some are solo waste collectors who never see a yard. Some have sophisticated software already. Some are running on spreadsheets and goodwill.
WasteBolt was built to meet sites where they are — not where we assume they should be. You can log a load at the gate without a weighbridge. You can submit to Digital Waste Tracking from a CSV your existing system already exports. You can have drivers log loads from a mobile phone with no training. The platform adapts.
CSV isn't old money — it's universal
Some will scoff at CSV support. We're proud of it.
